Protecting Home Owners from Property Tax Hikes

Lawmakers are constantly searching for new revenue streams to fund various pet projects, and in 2024 they introduced a proposal that would have sharply increased property taxes for everyday Coloradans by quadrupling the tax burden on short-term rentals. Recognizing the sweeping impact this would have on homeowners, tourism communities, and families who rely on rental income, the Headwaters team rapidly mobilized a broad coalition of stakeholders and property owners. Through strategic organizing, compelling testimony, and targeted advocacy, we succeeded in stopping the bill in its very first committee hearing. This work protected thousands of Coloradans from punitive tax hikes and preserved the ability for residents to responsibly rent their homes while continuing to contribute to Colorado’s vibrant economy.
